MANY OF OUR GUESTS OFTEN TELL ME THAT KATHAROS LOUNGE IS A UNIQUE PLACE.
THE ENERGY HERE IS MAGICAL.
Often they tell me there is a powerful sense of history in the surrounding landscape. If we trace the steps back to the mid 1900’s, the building was once a hospital treating patients with leprosy. There used to be a marina at the beach and before passage to the main village of Oia, the sick would be quarantined at Katharos so they wouldn’t spread diseases to the general population. Since then, our location at Katharos has been quite taboo and our reputation for being off the beaten track still holds true to this day.
A few years ago during renovations we peeled back all the layers of paint on the roofs of the building and found someone had spray painted “nudist beach” above the section which is now our bathroom. It was a warning to those heading down that there may be quite perverse sights ahead. Many locals tell me that in the 80’s only the adventurous and brave would come swim at our beach. Most of the conservative locals still do not venture down our way and find it taboo even now.
The landscape is quite intriguing with all the different layers of volcanic ashes when you observe the limestone sediment that make up our cliffs. The black beach is wild and pure without sun beds. Many travelers come here for a sense of privacy. Many geologists, archaeologists, and divers love our location for all of its uniqueness. If you observe closely, there are many hidden treasures in the beauty that surrounds us. The wind can be quite strong at times hitting us in all directions. Our place is exposed to all the elements of nature and we believe strongly in assimilating to our surroundings with respect for what existed before we arrived.
